DexProtector 12.11

At the 2022 Apple Worldwide Developer’s Conference (WWDC), Apple announced that bitcode had been deprecated and that older architectures like ARMv7, ARMv7s and i386 would no longer be supported as deployment targets.

Later in the year, Apple released the new Xcode 14, with bitcode generation disabled by default. At the same time, here at Licel we communicated our plan to transition our Swift and Objective-C encryption mechanisms away from bitcode, and instead provide fully native protection of ARM64 binaries.

We’re delighted to announce the release of DexProtector 12.11, which builds on these plans by removing all bitcode requirements and introducing new protection mechanisms for iOS applications.

The upshot of these improvements is that DexProtector can now secure iOS apps in a simpler and more effective way. 

We’ve introduced new native-level integrity checks for deep defense against modification of Mach-O binaries. We’ve also upgraded DexProtector’s runtime engine for iOS so that it is even more effective in detecting Dynamic Binary Instrumentation toolkits like Frida as well as jailbroken devices and simulators. And DexProtector 12.11 also comes with reinforced support for protecting hybrid applications built with Cordova/Ionic, Flutter, and Xamarin.  

Looking to the future, the expectation amongst both app users and developers is that Apple will introduce app sideloading support in iOS 17 at this year’s WWDC. 

Enabling users to download apps outside of the official App Store is a massive shift. It’s one that regulatory bodies and those in favour of increased competition have lobbied for some time. But there are some inevitable security concerns that come with iOS leaving its famed walled garden ecosystem.   

DexProtector’s robust security can shield applications from new threats that might arise in this new reality. Not least those that target apps for modification and cloning.
